Monday, August 29th, 2011: Texas 's Alonso NL Star of the Week


Texas fans had a lot to cheer about this week as left fielder Mario Alonso brought home the National Player of the Week trophy.

During his week-long batting binge he reeled off a .533 batting average, 16 hits and 2 home runs. Alonso also racked up 9 RBIs and scored 8 runs.

Thus far in 2011 Alonso is hitting .341 with 20 home runs, 82 RBIs, 108 runs scored and has compiled a .395 OBP.
Monday, August 29th, 2011: Prieto AL's Best of the Week


Iván Prieto is respected by most Toronto Bloodhounds fans for his no-frills style of play. The 30-year-old first baseman went about his business with vigor last week to grab the American Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .360 average (9-25) with 6 home runs, 15 RBIs and 7 runs scored.

So far in 2011 Prieto is hitting .393 with 43 home runs, 167 RBIs and 139 runs scored. He has 197 hits and played in 132 games.
Sunday, August 28th, 2011: Warriors (NL) Creswell Down and Out for Year


Doctors in Stripling said Martin Creswell may not play anymore this year. The Warriors (NL) second baseman received a torn rib cage muscle during a game against the Queens Sky Hawks and will be out for at least 8 weeks. Club officials told BNN they did not expect him to return to the team this season.

On the season, Creswell is batting .272 with 16 home runs and 69 RBIs. He has played in 128 games.
Sunday, August 28th, 2011: Hit Parade: Taylor Pops 5 Hits


Willie Taylor exploded for a barrage of base hits today at The Aquarium. The Portland center fielder had a field day in the 10-6 triumph over the Washington Senators, finishing with a 5-5 day and a spot in the league record book.

"My hitting philosophy is pretty simple," he said. "I focus on just seeing the ball and I try to get a good pitch."

Well, Taylor must have focused at least 5 times and apparently got some good pitches, too. It was one of his best days ever with the bat.

W. Taylor singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 6th and hit an RBI single in the 7th.

This season Taylor is hitting .370 with 15 home runs.
Sunday, August 28th, 2011: Rosko Strokes 3 HR Against Louisville


Todd Rosko of the South Bend Diamond Jaxx had a lot to celebrate in today's 7-6 win over the Louisville Sluggers. Three times he celebrated by pounding the ball out of Wrigley Field.

He kiddingly told reporters after the game, "Hopefully, I can continue to close my eyes and swing as hard as I can. It worked well today."

The powerful South Bend second baseman tagged 4 hits in 5 at-bats, drove in 6 runs and scored 4 times in his three-home-run outburst.

Rosko added, "Seriously, I just try to swing early and often to give myself a chance. I let the pitcher supply all the power, I just try to figure out how to get the bat on the ball."

"We talked about changing our strategy for the third one... and then he hit another homer," the Louisville manager said. "We just couldn't get him out."

T. Rosko hit a solo-shot off B. Zito in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off B. Zito in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 6th, grounded out in the 8th and hit a three-run home run off E. Villalon in the 10th.

This year Rosko is batting .333 with 12 hits, 6 home runs, 14 RBIs, 4 walks, .400 OBP and has scored 10 runs.
Saturday, August 27th, 2011: Biscan at His Best, Blanks Fresno


It was a smooth and solid performance by Frank Biscan of the Long Beach Baracuda against Fresno today. He crafted a fine 2-hitter in blanking them 5-0 and chalked up 5 strikeouts and no walks along the way.

"It certainly makes my job easy," said the Long Beach skipper. "When my pitcher pitches a shutout. I can just sit back, watch and enjoy."

This year Biscan has 9 wins and 8 losses and a 4.55 ERA.
Saturday, August 27th, 2011: Stripling Loses Herman, Will Miss Season


Babe Herman has to call it a season. The Stripling Warriors (NL) left fielder sustained a season-ending injury against the Queens Sky Hawks and will not play again this year according to club doctors. Herman was injured while making a defensive play. His doctors diagnosed it as a pinched nerve and stated that he would not be able to play for 8 months.

Looking at his 2011 season stats, Herman has compiled a .291 batting average in 109 games with a .329 on-base percentage, while hitting 8 home runs and driving in 41 runs.
Saturday, August 27th, 2011: Toronto Whitewashes Boston, Plank Winner


The Boston Red Sox had no answer today for Bloodhounds pitcher Eddie Plank. They failed to score a single run against him, losing 2-0. Boston managed only 6 hits off Plank and suffered 13 strikeouts.

In 2011 Plank has a 20-3 record with a 3.02 ERA in 25 starts.
Saturday, August 27th, 2011: Trade Rumors Flying in Monterey


Some sources in Monterey are reporting that Charlie Keller is having second thoughts about playing there. Rumor has it, the 33-year-old Mustangs right fielder has asked to be traded to a team closer to his home.
Friday, August 26th, 2011: Avent Hot, Red Sox Cold


The Anchorage Freeze shut out the Boston Red Sox behind the 3-hit pitching of Daniel Avent, winning by the score of 5-0 at The Igloo.

In 2011 Avent has fashioned a 12-7 mark, 3.86 ERA and pitched 188.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .271 against him and he has logged 146 strikeouts.

Friday, August 26th, 2011: Eric Bodden Hurt, Will Miss Rest of Year


The season is finished for Eric Bodden of the Ohio Thunder Shock. The club announced today that he will forego the rest of the year because of injury. The Thunder Shock reliever suffered a torn tricep muscle while throwing a pitch in a recent game against the Las Vegas Gamblers. Team doctors said it would take at least 13 months to heal.

Bodden's record so far this season is 8-and-10 with no saves and a 4.61 ERA. He has given up 185 hits in 171.2 innings with 128 strikeouts.
Thursday, August 25th, 2011: Philadelphia's Mcarthur Asked for Trade. Fact or Fiction?


Philadelphia's Dixie Mcarthur has mixed feelings about a possible trade. The 28-year-old reliever, when reached for comment on recent trade rumors, replied, "I've made some good friends here. I'm not sure I'm ready to leave."
Wednesday, August 24th, 2011: Kelton Pitches Warriors (NL) to Shutout Win


Stripling hurler Thomas Kelton was at his best as he whitewashed the Washington Senators 6-0 today.

"He just kept the ball down, did a good job, made his pitches," said the Washington manager. "We didn't do a good job making adjustments, so we helped him out a little bit."

Kelton fired a 3-hitter and totaled 5 strikeouts and 2 walks in the shutout performance.

This season Kelton has gone 10-9 with an ERA of 4.01, posting 110 strikeouts in 184 innings.
Wednesday, August 24th, 2011: Hits Galore: Alonso Drills 6 Hits


It's not something you read about in the sports pages every day -- a 6-for-6 day. It may only come around once in a career -- a lot of players never have one -- but Mario Alonso got one today. He scattered hits all over The Corral to pace Texas to a 26-2 victory over Long Beach.

The Long Beach skipper told reporters in the press room, "Tip your hat to him. He hit some good pitches. According to the scouting report, Alonso hit several that he is not supposed to hit."

M. Alonso hit a solo-shot off S. Mucha in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, tripled in the 6th, hit a two-run double in the 7th, walked in the 8th and hit a two-run double in the 8th.

For 2011 Alonso is batting .335 with 19 home runs, 79 RBIs and 106 runs scored.
Wednesday, August 24th, 2011: Hits Blitz for Thundering Herd Alonso


Texas left fielder Mario Alonso had a stellar day today at The Corral. His 6-hit day included a cycle and 5 RBI and was instrumental in the Thundering Herd 26-2 victory over the Long Beach Baracuda.

M. Alonso hit a solo-shot off S. Mucha in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, tripled in the 6th, hit a two-run double in the 7th, walked in the 8th and hit a two-run double in the 8th.

So far in 2011, Alonso is batting .335 with 19 home runs and 79 RBIs.

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011: Flames Whitewash Dragons, Stang Winner


Fresno rode the magical arm of Matthew Stang in a 6-0 shutout win over Chicago. He shackled them on 5 hits and fanned 7. Almost to a man, the Chicago Dragons said he had them guessing wrong all game long.

Checking out his stats for the year, Stang has racked up 7 wins and 18 losses in 30 starts, 6.80 ERA and struck out 163 batters in 177.1 innings.
Wednesday, August 24th, 2011: Gamblers Chill Jones's Hot Streak


Doug Jones's hit streak ended at 20 games today as the Thunder Shock left fielder went 0-for-4 in a 9-3 loss to the Gamblers.

"It's one of those things," Jones said. "It just didn't happen. I guess it was my day not to get a hit."

Jones is hitting .353 this season with 20 home runs, 83 RBIs and 81 runs scored. He has 167 hits in 473 at-bats.
Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011: Great Day for Rogozynski -- 5 Hits


Michelle Rogozynski exploded for a barrage of base hits today at The Aquarium. The Portland first baseman had a field day in the 15-1 triumph over the Long Beach Baracuda, finishing with a 5-6 day and a spot in the league record book.

Looking at his stats this year, Rogozynski has compiled a .325 batting average, while hitting 37 home runs and driving in 136 runs. He has played in 127 games and scored 112 runs.

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011: Baracuda Left Fielder Injured


Carlos Vázquez at first refused to leave today's Portland-Long Beach game after he suffered a strained tricep muscle while throwing the ball. But his manager convinced him not to be foolish. "I want to be on the field," the feisty Long Beach left fielder said. "I'll play through just about anything." Given time to reflect on the situation, he knew it was in his best interest to get immediate treatment. The injury is expected to keep Vázquez out of action for 2-3 weeks.

This year Vázquez has collected a .288 batting average to date with 134 hits in 465 at-bats, 64 RBIs, 13 home runs and scored 62 times. He has played in 121 games.
Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011: Porterfield Goes 5-6


Players get multi-hit games all the time. But a 5-hit game only comes around once in a blue moon. It happened at The Corral when Daniel Porterfield of Texas scattered 5 hits all over the ballpark against the Fresno Flames.

He walloped 5 hits in 6 at-bats in his career-day performance to help the Thundering Herd get by the Flames 6-5.

In a talkative and jovial mood after the game, the catcher of the Thundering Herd exclaimed, "Whoa, my swing was really, really there today. I made some good, sweet-spot contact and when that happens... good things happen... like 5-6. I could get used to a lot of days like this one."

D. Porterfield singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, doubled in the 4th, grounded out in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.

Porterfield on the season is hitting .378 with 9 home runs. His stats include 51 RBIs and 56 runs scored.

Monday, August 22nd, 2011: Arreola of Calgary Player of the Week


Danilo Arreola must have thought he died and went to heaven this week. First he went on a remarkable batting rampage, hammering the ball at a .522 clip, then the Calgary catcher finds outs he has been voted the league's top performer and gets the NL Player of the Week Award.

For the week Arreola batted .522 (12-23) with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs.

In 2011 Arreola is batting .379 with 9 home runs and 32 RBIs.


Monday, August 22nd, 2011:
American Selects Best Performer


This week Leonard Brandenburg, center fielder for the South Bend Diamond Jaxx, slashed, mashed and bashed his way to the American Player of the Week trophy.

Brandenburg put up a .600 average as he pounded out 12 hits, 1 home run, 4 RBIs and scored 7 runs.

So far in 2011 Brandenburg has hit .316 with 22 home runs and 75 RBIs. He has played in 110 games and scored 94 times.
Sunday, August 21st, 2011: Bloodhounds Bostillos Suffers Injury


The Bloodhounds received bad news this morning. Pacho Bostillos will miss one week due to a fractured finger. In the Toronto-Baltimore game he sustained the injury while making a defensive play. "I'm disappointed more than anything," he told reporters later in the day. "You can't help your team on the bench," Bostillos sighed. "I'll do the rehab work and hope for a quick recovery."

This season Bostillos is batting .290 with 23 home runs. His totals include 97 RBIs and 110 runs scored.
Sunday, August 21st, 2011: Bloodhounds Lose Velásquez


Toronto fans will be disappointed to learn that Pablo Velásquez developed blurred vision while colliding with a player at a base in today's game. After the doctor informed the Toronto Bloodhounds manager that Velásquez was expected to miss 2-3 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the second baseman could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

This year Velásquez is hitting at a .417 pace with 5 home runs and 39 RBIs. He has played in 79 games and scored 96 times.
Saturday, August 20th, 2011: Stripling Loses Pennypacker


The Stripling Warriors (NL) will lose the services of reliever Garrett Pennypacker after he sustained a tender shoulder while throwing a pitch in today's game against the Long Beach Barracuda. "I'll get through it," Pennypacker said. "The key now is to stay positive." His trainer said he is expected to be sidelined for the next 1-2 weeks.
Saturday, August 20th, 2011: Season Possibly Over for Juan Anguita


The news is bad in Fresno. The Flames have lost the services of center fielder Juan Anguita for the rest of the season due to a torn back muscle. Anguita was injured in a recent game with the Portland Sea Dogs while making a defensive play and is expected to miss 2 months.

So far this year Anguita has 1 home run and a .326 batting average.
Friday, August 19th, 2011: Dodd Listed DTD with Injury


The Portland Sea Dogs may have to play on without standout right fielder Doug Dodd for at least one week after he suffered a strained back muscle in a game against the Fresno Flames. The team has him listed as day-to-day.

Dodd has collected 133 hits for the Sea Dogs this year, 19 of them home runs. He has also netted 69 RBIs and scored 79 runs while batting .364.
Friday, August 19th, 2011: Rumor: Unhappy Reichardt Leaving Red Sox


Several teams have surfaced as a possible trading partner with Boston for Rick Reichardt -- or so rumor has it. Sources inside the Red Sox organization report that teams have inquired about making a deal for the 32-year-old left fielder.
Tuesday, August 16th, 2011: Samurakami out 1-2 Weeks


Texas fans will be disappointed to learn that Jun'ichi Samurakami developed a fractured finger while being hit by a pitch in today's game. After the doctor informed the Texas Thundering Herd manager that Samurakami was expected to miss 1-2 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the third baseman could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

So far this year Samurakami is batting .267 with 6 home runs.
Tuesday, August 16th, 2011: Career-Ending Injury for Jessup


A severe injury sustained in yesterday's contest against Portland at The Corral has cut short the baseball career of Leo Jessup at the age of 26. Team officials reported that the Texas starting pitcher was injured throwing a pitch and suffered a ruptured bicep tendon that will end his career.

Checking out his stats for the season, Jessup has racked up 2 wins and 2 losses in 5 starts, 2.96 ERA and struck out 27 batters in 48.2 innings.
Tuesday, August 16th, 2011: Los Angeles's Dyer to Miss Season


The news is bad in Los Angeles. The Gunslingers have lost the services of starting pitcher Roderick Dyer for the rest of the season due to a fractured elbow. Dyer was injured in a recent game with the Baltimore Orioles while throwing a pitch and is expected to miss 8 months.

So far this season Dyer has a 10-11 record with a 4.02 ERA.
